Photuki Cube Folding Instructions

Below you will find step by step instructions on how to fold an Origami Photuki Cube.
In each step, you can click on the graphic to see an enlargement and/or an animation.
Close each new window, in turn, when done.

Step 1: Print File

Locate the completed template bitmap file photuki.bmp in the Photuki program directory (or alternate location if appropriate). Print in color using a graphics program like Windows 7 Paint or Ultimate Paint (fit to page).

Step 2: Trim Paper

Trim the Photuki printout to an 8-sided shape
(an octagon).

Step 3: Preliminary Folds

With the image side up, make each of 4 vertical folds and 4 horizontal folds by folding the paper backwards (mountain fold) along the edges of all square images.

Step 4: Vertical Center Fold

With the image side up and the TL/TR & BL/BR locators upright, divide the paper in half by folding it forwards and aligning its vertical edges (valley fold). With 6 images, the fold line will be parallel to the 2 sets of 3 squares with the same image.

Step 5: Diagonal Folds

Make each of two diagonal folds by folding the paper backwards and creasing along the diagonals (mountain fold) of the associated image squares.

Step 6: Trim Paper Again

Remove the two narrow strips on the extreme left and right. These strips should be parallel to the vertical center fold and should not contain the TL/TR & BL/BR locators.

Step 7: Form Triangle

Rotate the paper clockwise 90º, then collapse it along the fold lines through the center to create a triangular shape. The TL/TR & BL/BR locators should be hidden and the vertex of the right triangle should be pointing down.

Step 8: Additional Folds

Make two one-layer diagonal folds, one on the left and one on the right, so each top half-edge is vertical. When done, the TR & BR (or TL & BL) locators should lie side by side. Turn the paper over and repeat to form a diamond.

Step 9: Fold 1st Triangular Tab

Make a one-layer diagonal fold (shown in red) so the top and right edge of the central square (shown in green) are aligned and the smaller square to the right of the diagonal fold swings and flattens into position on the central square.

Step 10: Reposition 1st Triangular Tab

Tuck the triangular tab beneath the left half of the truncated diamond.

Step 11: Fold 2nd Triangular Tab

Make a one-layer diagonal fold (shown in red) so the top and left edge of the central square (shown in green) are aligned and the smaller square to the left of the diagonal fold swings and flatterns into position on the central square.

Step 12: Interlock Triangular Tabs

Pull out from beneath, then insert the 1st triangular tab inside the 2nd triangular tab (or vice versa) to create a secure "lock". Turn the paper over and repeat Steps 9 to 12.

Step 13: Inflate Photuki Cube

Now, blow it up like a balloon! Blow into the opening on the triangular top end and lift the sides at the same time.

Step 14: Fill Cube (Optional)

Fill the cube through the top opening with candy or nuts. A delightful gift!
